Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. – 1 Chronicles 29:11 ESV
This past weekend (May 2-4, 2025), Jeannie and I took an impromptu getaway to Niagara Falls. Initially the plan was to be in Pittsburgh so I could run the half marathon, but my training prep had been horrible. So we decided to change our destination at the last minute and visit Niagara Falls. Neither one of us had been there, and it would be nice to have a couple of days of vacation.

The first item on the agenda was to ride on the Maid of the Mist. If you’re not familiar, the Maid of the Mist is a large boat ride that takes tourists around the base of the falls. We were prepared to be wet, but we weren’t prepared to be awed. What deeply impressed us both was the sheer power of the falls. As I understand it, 600,000 gallons of water plunge over the falls every second. As the boat approached the base of Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the falls, the blast from the mist was so strong it was difficult to stand. Needless to say, that’s a lot of energy!
The point of sharing this short story is to illustrate the incredible power of the God we serve. Our Creator made Niagara Falls. Their temporal power is nothing compared to his eternal power. When the water of the falls ceases to flow, his power will remain unchanged.
On the second day of our trip, we visited the Niagara Falls Power station. The idea of electrical power stations at the falls is to harness the natural energy present to benefit the cities and regions nearby. Despite the awesome power of these majestic falls there is a limit to what can be accomplished. With God’s power, however, there is no limit.
The Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 3:20-21, “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Is the power of God at work in you? Has he saved you from your sin and given you a new heart? Are you resting in Jesus and the promises of his word to empower you for daily living? Is the Holy Spirit transforming you and enabling you for ministry? Pray to him and ask him to save you. Lean upon him and trust him for all you need in daily life. He is faithful to provide, not according to our earthly means, but according to his Divine power.
With a shepherd’s heart,
Pastor David
