So Great a Cloud of Witnesses

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. – Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV

Last night I attended a basketball game of the Lady Raiders here in Waynesburg. They were facing a challenging opponent, and the contest was close from beginning to end. At the sound of the final buzzer, however, the home team clinched the victory. All during the game, the stands were full of loud, often boisterous cheering fans. They included family, friends, and many church members. While the ladies possessed a great deal of talent on the court, the inspiring presence of so many supporters in the bleachers lifted their spirits and encouraged them when the going was tough.
The passage quoted above encourages us as followers of Jesus to consider the many saints who have gone before us. In the struggles we face, the problems we encounter, and the suffering we endure, we should remember that we are not alone. We not only have brothers and sisters in our local church to support us, but we also have the example of departed saints to boost our spirits. As God provided for them in their pilgrimage of following Jesus, and led them safely home, so God will provide for us. Learn from their example, be encouraged by their perseverance, and be faithful to Christ as they were faithful.
The heritage we have as a local congregation, and as Baptists in general, is filled with moving examples of sound Biblical theology and sacrificial Christian service. There are vital lessons to be learned, and vital encouragement to be gained, by drawing upon the example of faithful saints who now surround us as “so great a cloud of witnesses.” If we disregard the lessons to be learned from the past, our spiritual success in the present is diminished. Deuteronomy 32:7 says, “Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you.”
How will things be for you when the final buzzer sounds for the contest of your life? By trusting in Jesus now and drawing upon the inspiration of saints who have gone before you, you too will experience the ultimate victory.
With a shepherd’s heart,
Pastor David
